BigCommerce is much easier to use than other systems. It has a series of easy to use set up wizards that walk you through the whole process of setting up your online store. Most people can follow the guides and have their store up and running within a day.
BigCommerce provide excellent free support and if you have a problem that is not covered by the free support Anyware is only a phone call or email away. We've always got your back.

Friend Friendly

Small business owners often ask a helpful friend to set up their web site.
This can be an option if you have a friend who is IT savvy.

We always admire the good intentioned, helpful friend who is willing to build a web site for a friend.
We've also learned that they seldom last long. This is always a much greater commitment than they realise and when they can no longer spare the time to support an ever changing web site... well, we've seen business owners close to tears because they had to start again.

In our experience, the friend usually chooses a system that they are familiar with and can provide great support for. But when they are gone it's often impossible to find somebody else to support the system they built.

BigCommerce can do pretty much everything that other shopping carts can do (and usually much, much more). But it's far easier to use, has great training, excellent free support and even better paid, local support from Anyware.

Seriously, thank you again - I had been googling for solutions with outdated info, essentially, so I was looking for things like shopping cart software I could add to my existing site, not even realising there were places like BigCommerce out there to look for in the first place. All the shop add-ons with the hosting companies were really limited in terms of options (didn't support NZD and couldn't handle local tax, very low limit on product numbers etc). The people I was paying to build something hadn't actually managed to make a glitch-free checkout process, and took forever to make changes, but this? Excellent. The structure worked from day one, so it was just a matter of slotting the products and info into place. It was also very customisable, too, which was great when I wanted to tweak things.

Free Shopping Carts

You've probably heard of Open Source shopping carts like OSCommerce, ZenCart (and many others).
These are popular systems because they are completely free.

Sort of.

You'll need to pay for web hosting. It will probably be slightly less than the monthly fee for BigCommerce.

You'll need to pay somebody to install the shopping cart. Or ask a friend to do it (see above).
You'll need to pay somebody to install the latest update every time a security patch is released (sometimes monthly). Or risk losing your whole web site and database to a hacker (it happens regularly).
You'll often need to pay somebody when you want to make changes to your web site because you can't figure out how to do it.

Free shopping carts are also famous for being difficult to install, configure and use. That's more cost, inconvenience and difficulty that takes you away from running your business.

So my best recommendation is to always get a demonstration of a shopping cart before you use it.
You need to see how easy it is to place an order, process a payment, ship an order, load a product and add a new category.
These may seem like trivial things that should be easy to do but I've met plenty of disparing business owners who are locked in to a shopping cart they find impossible to use. And business always suffers.
