BigCommerce vs Shopify - Monthly Cost Comparison/Review
To maximise your long term e-commerce profit you need to estimate your monthly shopping cart costs and choose the platform that best suits your business. This guide gives you estimated costs based on turnover for both BigCommerce and Shopify.
This comparison is based on the following BigCommerce and Shopify plans (all in US dollars)...
Standard: $29.95 / month up to $50k annual turnover.
Plus: $79.95 / month up to $125k annual turnover. Includes customer groups and abandoned cart saver.
Pro: $299.95 / month up to $1m annual turnover. Includes Google reviews, faceted search and dedicated SSL.
BigCommerce automatically upgrades you based on your turnover (i.e. when you hit $50k annual turnover you move from $29.95 to $79.95 per month). Note that because Anyware are a significant BigCommerce partner, we can help you negotiate monthly fees if you reach the 299.95 level.
Basic: $29 / month, card processing from 2.7% + 30¢.
Shopify: $79 / month, card processing from 2.5% + 30¢. Includes gift cards, reports and abandoned cart recovery.
Advanced: $299 / month, card processing from 2.4% + 30¢. Includes advanced reports and 3rd party shipping calculator.
Shopify fees include a credit card processing fee if you use Shopify Payments to process payments (BigCommerce don't have this option). If you use a 3rd party payment gateway (such as Stripe, Paypal or Paystation) they charge a transation fee from 0.5% to 2%.

Which Payment Processor?
Payment Processing Costs
If you only sell online and only need to process cardholder not present transactions you may be able to use an all-in-one credit card payment processing service like Stripe, Shopify Payments or Paypal. These services keep your life simple and your fees low by including both the payment gateway and credit card merchant account.
If you have a physical presence and need to process cardholder present and cardholder not present transactions you will need a credit card merchant account (from your bank) and a payment gateway service that allows your merchant account to accept payments from both your shopping cart and your POS hardware.
For a breakdown of payment processing costs see our two comparisons:
If you only sell online Shopify Payments is fast and easy to set up with low fees, you don't need a credit card merchant account and your customers don't have to leave your checkout page to process their payment.
If you have a small retail presence Paystation allows you to use your credit card merchant account with Shopify.
If you have a large retail presence or sophistcated POS hardware then Payment Express connects your credit card merchant account to Shopify and all your POS hardware.
If you only sell online PayPal or Eway are relatively easy to set up and you don't need a credit card merchant account. Stripe is our favourite but it's not available with BigCommerce yet.
For a small retail presence Paystation allows you to use your credit card merchant account with BigCommerce. Paystation works well with BigCommerce because customers don't have to leave your checkout page to process their payment.
For a large retail presence or sophistcated POS hardware, Payment Express connects your credit card merchant account to BigCommerce and all the different POS hardware you may need.
