Most email services won’t send an attachment larger than about 20 to 25 MB (megabytes, the usual measure of file size). A handful of photos from a phone, or one short video, can easily be bigger than that.
The simplest way to send something bigger is to put it in online storage (a service that keeps your files on the internet) and email a link to it instead. The person you send it to clicks the link to download the file. If you use Gmail or Outlook, this is already built in and free.
If You Use Gmail
- Write your email and attach the file the usual way, by clicking the paperclip.
- If the file is larger than 25 MB, Gmail puts it in your Google Drive (Google’s free online storage) and adds a link to the email instead.
- Click Send. If Gmail asks about sharing the file, choose the option that lets the person you’re emailing open it.
If You Use Outlook
- Write your email and attach the file the usual way.
- If the file is too big to send, Outlook offers to put it in OneDrive (Microsoft’s online storage) and send a link instead. Choose Upload to OneDrive.
- Make sure the link lets the person you’re emailing open the file, then click Send.
If You Use Something Else
Upload the file to Google Drive or OneDrive, share it, and paste the link into your email. Both are free, but you’ll need a free Google or Microsoft account.
