1. Why is my website not on page 1 when I search for “washing machines” in Google?
When we build your website we use basic search engine optimisation techniques to get your business name the best ranking we can, without spending hours doing so. We focus on your business name because that is how most of your customers are likely to find you initially.
To get your site ranked well for other keyword phrases, we first need to identify what those keyword phrases should be, then we need to optimise page(s) of your website to rank well for each keyword phrase (like “washing machines”). The amount of work we put into getting you a top ranking depends on how much competition you have for that keyword, and how much work your competition has put into getting ranked well (like adding lots of keyword rich pages and gathering keyword rich links from other websites).
Search engines try to return the best content they can find for the keyword phrase that is being searched, so to deliver the best content (and get a top ranking) you generally need to focus one page (or more) on each keyword phrase you want a good ranking for.
See our Search Engine Optimization for more information on how to get your site a great ranking.
2. How do I know if Google Ads is worth the investment?
Anyware’s Google Ads Snapshot shows you each month how well your Google Ads campaign is performing. Here’s a detailed explanation of the monthly Google Ads Snapshot reports we send for Google Ads campaigns, including a detailed FAQ.
3. Can I add email addresses?
Yes we can forward email to your email address.
We require some information from you:
- We will need the name you would like to add to the email eg sales@anyware.co.nz
- We also need the address you would like to forward this email to eg sales_anyware@paradise.net.nz
Once this is done, emails sent to sales@anyware.co.nz will arrive at sales_anyware@paradise.net.nz. You don’t change your email other than tell your email programme your email address is now sales@anyware.co.nz.
Please see, Anyware Insights – Issue 5:
How To Set Up Your Email Program To Get The Most From Your Domain Name for more information and useful hints.
4. Do I have to use my name in my email address?
No. As you will own your domain name (the name of your website – for instance anyware.co.nz) you can use any name that you like. We recommend using an info@<domain-name.co.nz> or admin or a name that represents your company rather than an individual for general email.
5. Can I use any font type on my website?
Yes, almost any font. A website can use nearly any font, because the font is sent to your visitor’s browser along with the page. There are hundreds of free fonts, such as those in our Google Font List, and we can also use fonts you have bought.
The one thing to watch is permission. Many fonts are licensed for printing only, so check that you are allowed to use a font on a website. Our guide What Fonts Can I Use on My Website? explains how to choose fonts that are easy to read, quick to load and that you are allowed to use.
6. What are Links and how can they help my rankings?
Links can be a useful way to improve your rankings in search engines. The key for links is to ensure that they offer something useful to your website visitors and don’t take business away from you. Generally when looking at links I look for the following:
- Related to the business, but not in competition with the business
- Have a good ranking in search engines already – poor ranking websites can be harmful to you
- Offer something useful to the visitor of the site
- A good ranking overseas site that do similar things as the business but do not do business in New Zealand
If you are selective with your links then you can generally build up a good list of links that will enhance your search engine presence.
As for placement, the thing to consider is how you want those links to work. Some people use dedicated links pages which can be good. Another way is to display a link on a page that the link could relate to. You could place links at the bottom of a related page, though this may make the page look a little untidy.
Be careful about swapping links. Exchanging links with lots of unrelated websites no longer helps, and it can harm your rankings, because Google wants links that have been earned. A few links from websites your customers already trust, such as suppliers, industry bodies and local directories, are worth far more.
If you need help with selecting the best keywords for you we can help you there with a little bit of keyword research. For more information on our Search Engine Optimisation methods please see our Search Engine Optimisation page.
7. How do I copy a Web Address?
In your web browser, right click on the address bar and select copy. (The address bar is typically near the top of the program with a Go button next to it). Once copied, you can then paste it into most word applications as you want.
