For most businesses, your website’s first job is to back up word of mouth. Someone hears about you, looks you up, and decides quickly whether to get in touch. Here are five signs yours might be getting in the way.

1. It doesn’t work properly on a phone. Text runs off the screen, buttons are too small to tap, the menu won’t open. If people have to pinch and zoom to read it, plenty of them will just leave.

2. The information is out of date. Old prices, services you no longer offer, opening hours that changed two years ago. A wrong answer is worse than no answer.

3. It’s slow. If a page takes more than a few seconds to show up, people leave before they’ve seen it. Google also takes speed into account when it decides who to show first.

4. You can’t change it yourself. If fixing a phone number means calling a developer and waiting, it won’t get done. A website should be easy to update.

5. You wouldn’t send a friend there. It’s the simplest test. If the honest answer is no, it’s time to do something about it.
